Santa Margherita Ligure and Riomaggiore

Situated between the Gulf of Tigullio and the Cinque Terre, Santa Margherita Ligure and Riomaggiore embody two distinct aspects of the Ligurian coast. Santa Margherita, which developed around ancient fishing villages, reached the height of its splendour between the 19th and 20th centuries, when it became a favourite destination for the European aristocracy, leaving behind a legacy of elegant villas and palaces overlooking the sea. Further south, Riomaggiore clings to the rocky cliffs of the Cinque Terre, with its colourful houses built along the narrow valley of the stream. Two distinct landscapes, united by the same centuries-old relationship between man, the sea and a land as spectacular as it is difficult to inhabit.
